At Home, a Child Begins to Thrive

At Home, a Child Begins to Thrive

It makes a difference to our family, Otherwise I would be so stressed, and my stress leads into everybody else being overwhelmed.

— Deborah Schneider

After months in the hospital, one mother’s search for reliable pediatric home nursing led her family to Towne Kids — and to a new sense of stability.

When Deborah Schneider’s baby, Solomon, finally came home after three months in the hospital, she thought the hardest part might be behind them. But for a parent caring for a medically fragile child, leaving the hospital can bring its own uncertainty.

Born in Chicago, Solomon had spent the first months of his life under close medical supervision due to a heart defect and a host of other ailments. When he was discharged with home health nursing, Schneider said her experience with a local agency left her uneasy — and unsure whether she could trust another company with her son’s care.

Still, Schneider wanted to give her family something that felt ordinary after months defined by hospital rooms, monitors, and medical decisions: a summer together at their home in New Jersey.

The plan depended on finding care she could believe in. “I was so anxious about the nursing situation because of what I had dealt with in Chicago,” she recalled. “I didn’t trust another agency.”

Then she found Towne Kids.

Based in New Jersey and Massachusetts, Towne Kids provides skilled pediatric home care for children with complex medical needs. For Schneider, the difference was immediate.

“Towne was so beyond incredible with my baby, with the care, that I felt like I couldn’t go back home to Chicago,” she said.

What began as a summer stay became a turning point, partly because of the quality of home nursing her son received. Schneider moved to New Jersey full time. She still returns to Chicago for visits and specialty medical care, but each trip, she said, reminds her why she made the decision to stay.

The change was not only about convenience. It was about trust.

One of Schneider’s Towne Kids nurses noticed something that Schneider had not yet fully recognized: her baby appeared to be experiencing severe sleep apnea. At first, Schneider tried to reassure herself. Her son was on oxygen. He was on a monitor. He was being watched. But the nurse kept raising the concern.

“She kept persisting and telling me something was not right,” Schneider said. “And she was completely right.”

The concern led Schneider to seek hospital evaluation. Doctors considered the situation urgent, but after weighing the circumstances and consulting with her medical team, Schneider decided her child would be better served by getting to the specialists who knew him best. She had confidence that, at home, her son was being carefully monitored and well cared for.

That confidence has reshaped daily life for the family.

With skilled nurses in the home, Schneider said, the family’s routines run smoothly around her son’s medical needs. The constant stress that once threatened to spill into every part of family life has eased. Instead of organizing each day around fear, the family can focus on living.

Now, she said, Solomon is happy and content. He is growing and developing at his own pace, with the support he needs and the comfort of family around him.

“He’s literally thriving,” Schneider said.

Every journey matters.
