Why You Should Take the NCLEX Despite Retrogression: A Guide for Filipino Nurses
When retrogression took effect in 2023, it had a huge impact on the dreams of many nurses across the globe, particularly in the countries affected. Abandonment cases increased, some agencies stopped operating, many thought it was over for them, and others began to question whether they should still pursue opportunities in the United States and take the NCLEX. But you should know that retrogression is not a hindrance. It is only a delay.
Some nurses ask themselves, “Is it still worth taking the NCLEX even if the visa is not current?” The short answer is yes, and here are the reasons why.

Pros of Taking the NCLEX Amidst Retrogression
1. Get Ahead of the Queue
Processing for the U.S. typically takes approximately 2 to 3 years during retrogression. If you pass the NCLEX early, you already have the required credentials, making the process easier once visa movement resumes.
2. Faster Job Matching
Agencies prioritize NCLEX passers. If you already have the credentials, it will be easier for you to be petitioned immediately once visa numbers become available.
3. Your Knowledge Is Still Fresh
Newly registered nurses have strong theoretical knowledge. This makes it easier for them to pass the NCLEX compared to nurses who have been out of school for many years.
4. Long-Term Career Security
NCLEX results do not expire. Even if retrogression lasts for several years, your license remains valid, giving you the flexibility to pursue opportunities in the U.S. or elsewhere.
Who Should Take the NCLEX Now?
Taking the NCLEX during retrogression is ideal for:
- Newly licensed Filipino nurses (PHRN)
- Nurses with hospital experience
- Nurses who are 100% committed to becoming USRN
- Nurses who want to be deployment-ready earlier
Recommended Path for Aspiring USRNs
- Take and Pass the NCLEX
- Look for an agency and start securing your priority date. Keep in mind that some agencies require at least 2 to 4 years of bedside experience, especially if you plan to work in a hospital or other settings.
- Once you have a priority date, stay in touch with your agency and avoid fraudulent visa applications. While waiting, you can practice your skills, spend more time with your family, or improve your driving. But always keep the vision that you will soon continue your journey abroad.
- The movement of the U.S. Visa Bulletin is unpredictable but progressive. Your priority date will eventually become current, and before long, you’ll be deployed to the USA.
